When does a child truly understand what recycling means? When you start with “once upon a time.”

Once upon a time, there was a happy planet that people forgot to protect. A hero and a mission. A team of children who became heroes themselves. Challenges, contests, and rewarding experiences that inspired action. That’s how, in 2011, the most beloved character was born — “Baterel, the Recycling Hero” — along with ENVIRON’s longest-running project: 14 editions with happy endings and over 520 tons of electrical waste recycled thanks to the children’s involvement.

Baterel, the Recycling Hero is a national environmental education campaign dedicated to students of all school levels, carried out with the support of the Ministry of Education and Research.

The program includes selective collection of electrical waste and used batteries, interactive recycling lessons, and a series of themed challenges that reward children’s involvement with items from the Baterel collection, school equipment, and the grand prize — a summer camp experience.

Early environmental education is a moral and social responsibility — one we owe to ourselves and to future generations.
Baterel means:

  • a community of over 250,000 preschoolers and students
  • 1,500 open lessons where children learned about recycling
  • 520 tons of electrical waste recycled thanks to children’s involvement
  • more than 3,000 schools, high schools, and kindergartens engaged nationwide
  • 14 completed editions and tens of thousands of prizes awarded
  • 2 national awards recognizing the project’s impact in education

For almost 15 years of continuous involvement in children’s environmental education, we have been taking steady steps forward for students across Romania.
Year after year, we strive to create new resources — guides, books, and materials — that serve as inspirational and practical teaching tools, supporting the national “Green Week” and “Different School Week” programs:

  • “Baterel and Amy Teach You” Guide
  • “The ABC of Household Appliances” Mini-Dictionary
  • “2 Minutes with Amy” Educational Series
  • “Three Friends” Storybook
